Client: The Learning Trust
Duration: 64 weeks
Brook School:
Is a Victorian building in the heart of inner city Hackney. The building needed some works to bring it up to date, including a complete rewire and new fire alarm system, new sanitary ware and decorations to the toilet block, a new staff room and the reception area was reconfigured to meet the school’s current requirements. A major part of the project was the construction of a glass Mirador™ structure to house a new five-level lift shaft and so provide full disabled access to the school premises. The project was carried out with the school fully operational.
Sir Thomas Abney School:
Built in the 1960s of brick and concrete cladding, was not only showing its age but also thermally inefficient. Lengard were engaged to remove the old concrete cladding and apply Wetherby Building System insulated render to give it a modern appearance and improve its thermal efficiency. We also carried out some roof replacement, renewed some windows and doors whilst overhauling the remaining windows. All works were carried out whilst the school was fully operational.
Millfields Community Primary:
Lengard were engaged to replace the school’s windows, numbering 240 in total, and carry out associated repairs and decorations. As the school was occupied throughout the works, the pupils’ safety was of paramount importance. We, therefore, explained the inherent dangers of building sites to the children, gave
them all a comic-style safety booklet and ran a competition, inviting them to design a safety poster, picking a winner from each year.
Northwold School:
Is a late Victorian building that had been given a toilet block extension in the Seventies. Whilst the original building had stood the test of time admirably, unfortunately the extension had not. Phase I of the refurbishment works saw the extension demolished and new WCs installed within the existing building. Phase II involved the construction of a new-build extension to provide office accommodation as well as staff WCs and a new staff room. Lengard also installed a platform lift to facilitate disabled access. The new facilities provided an oasis of calm for the staff in a bustling inner-city school.
