Lengard has completed the contract to construct a new single-storey children’s centre on a Design and Build basis. Additional works included re-routing the school’s main gas supply and redesigning the staff car park.
Environmental measures were incorporated into the design, aiming for a SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model) rating that exceeds Building Control minimum requirements. The new children’s centre was comprehensively insulated, has hi-spec double-glazed windows to minimise energy use and has surface water attenuation measures. There are two monodraft wind catchers on the roof allowing automated
natural cooling ventilation in warm weather, complemented by an Ecodan™ low carbon air-to-water heat pump to take the heat out of the atmosphere (effective to ─20ºC, has 3.6 COP and very low running costs) and feed the underfloor heating providing hot water.
The centre was built within the grounds of an existing occupied school, requiring close liaison with the Head Teacher and excellent Health & Safety measures to keep pupils, staff and visitors safe.
